A common misconception among consumers is that "I can change my mind and get my money back" even after a contract is signed. In some limited circumstances, state or federal laws may provide a "cooling off" period, usually three days, in which a consumer may change his or her mind for any reason and cancel the contract without consequences.

Small Businesses Should Partner with a Collection Ageny, Part 1

Collection agencies have long been integral to the success of the small business owner. Small businesses face special challenges in recovering outstanding debt. Unlike large businesses such as hospitals and credit card companies, the average small business owner does not have the time or resources to devote to chasing bad debt, nor does he have the financial security to easily write-off bad debt as one of the costs of doing business. For these companies, recouping past due balances can be the difference between financial success and complete failure. A good collection agency can prevent the small business owner from facing bankruptcy, lay-offs and closure.

| Reporting Payments

I would like to remind everyone how important it is that you report all payments that are made directly to your office. Once an account is placed with our office we work very diligently to collect it. Should we continue to make calls even after a debtor/customer has paid, our actions could be perceived as harassment and it could create problems for your business and for our business. Reporting payments is also necessary so that we can bill you accordingly for our work. Making a list of debtors/customers that have been placed for collection available to your staff may help in this process. Thank you, Jan. |
| Women in Business Scholarship Program |
For the past two years I have served on a committee of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce called Women in Business. As a part of my service I have worked on a sub committee, The WIB Scholarship Program. The committee members are a fine group of women with a mutual desire to help other women. Each year the WIB Scholarship Program awards money donated by business owners and generous folks who care about the well being of these women in need. Scholarships in the past have provided assistance to an abused woman who aspired to become a geriatric nurse; supported a caring individual left physically disabled after an accident, who wished to further her education in counseling psychology; enabled a single mother of four to pursue a life-long dream of studying computer-aided design; aided the single parent of a young child as she completed her nursing degree. Since 1983 over $168,000 in scholarships have been awarded by the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Scholarship Program. The scholarships are available to women beginning or continuing their professional or business careers within the following parameters:
- Applicable to an accredited institution
- Applicant must demonstrate educational merit and financial need
- Must be a woman age 25 or older, who is a Bucks County PA resident
- Must be a United States Citizen
